The river at Glaslyn has excellent Trout and Grayling fishing, having it's own spawning beds. It therefore should be self-generating and there is a good stock of fish. "Trout and Salmon" magazine carried a five-page feature on the exceptional Grayling fishing at Glaslyn by John Wilshaw, headed "where to catch a two pounder". This stretch of river is also stocked with Brown Trout at regular intervals. The Salmon fishing varies from year to year, over 30 caught in 1993 but only four in 2000. There are some specimen Grayling up to 3 ¼ lbs and Brown Trout up to 2-3lb (the exception being a brown trout of 12lb 5oz caught in May 2000.

Rods and Bag Limit

We operate practice a 'catch and release' policy, so everyone has sport for the future - with specimen fish in the river. Salmon as per by laws. A National River Boards licence is required by all rods fishing the River Wye.

The Glaslyn fishing comprises a length of nearly 3 miles of single-bank and some double-bank of the River Wye plus a further half-mile of double-bank fishing on both the River Wye and the River Elan above the Junction Pool (River Elan section is not available on Wednesdays):

The Junction Pool

This pool is formed by the junction of the River Elan and the River Wye and includes a few yards frontage to the River Elan. The Junction Pool is probably one of the best known pools in the upper river. It has a deep holding pool and the flow favours our bank, which has been strengthened with gabions. The pool is therefore easily covered from the bank with easy walking. Below the pool there is a stretch of broken water and then long, gravelly glides for the remainder of the beat. It is mainly trout water but it should be possible to pick up salmon on the fly later in the season. It is also good grayling water.

The Lower Beat

This comprises a length of about 1,562yards single bank on the left bank (almost a mile). It starts at its upstream end at the first fence line downstream from the Cottages and within a few yards you reach the Garden Pool. This comprises a glide of rockstrewn gravel with numerous lies. A run of rocky broken water then runs down to Llyn Cam, here the current favours our bank to form deep water with many rocky lies. Much bank work has been done here by the making of paths, etc, enabling this stretch to be fished. It is now a very challenging stretch indeed, with the odds being loaded in favour of the fish which are able to evade capture by looping round the rocks. This is ideal fly water. Then there are rapids of broken water, below which makes Llyn Cam a very attractive resting place for the fish after scaling the rapids. In the same way Sand Pool, which comes next, is a favourite resting place for the fish before they go through the rapids. This stretch is at its best in the Spring and Autumn when the river is about 2 feet deep. The Wall Pool comes next. It is an excellent stretch which lies between two croys. It is a good holding pool and an excellent low water stretch which is probably at its best at about 18 inches to 2 feet, but fish have been taken here at 3 feet. It is from here that a fish of about 27 ½ lbs was taken a few years ago by the then - Ghillie's wife.

A galvanised catwalk has been made under the road wall, passed rock-strewn broken water which leads to Howells Catch and to Glan Rhos Pool. This is a good fly pool which has been underfished in the past. There is a nice ledge on our side and this short but deep pool is fished from the concrete stands on the bank. The stream then divides through the rocks and there is then broken water down to a rock-strewn glide above Llanwrthwl Bridge known as the Bridge Pool. Craig Llyn fishing is below Llanwrthwl Bridge with about 1.5 miles of single /double banks. See separate map on the location page.
